It is known that the first theatre building in the contemporary history of the island was the San Giacomo Theatre, which was created in 1720 and during the first years of its existence it would only host dramas and comedies. This leads us to the result that something must have pre-existed.
Since 1733 the theater started to present to its audience operas , a type of art which fitted perfectly the temperament of the Corfiot people.
In 1902 the new lyric theater of Corfu was inaugurated, with a capacity of 1000 places and impeccable acoustics , one of the finest theatres in Europe . Unfortunately, the Municipal Theatre was destroyed by the Nazi bombardments of 1943 . In 1980 the modern Municipal Theater was constructed.
Today, Corfu has several outdoor and indoor theatres, which host important performances .
