Lawrence Durrell (1912-1990).
One of the most important novelists of the 20th century. He wrote « Alexandria Quartet » (1958-60), which changed the orientation of modern novel writing and « Avignon Quintet » (1974-85), whith which he achieved in the combination of the western narrative stye and the oriental philosophy.
Gerald Durrell (1925-1995).
He was the founder of the zoo of Jersey (1959) and of «Wildlife Preservation Trust International» (1972).
In 1935 the Durrells moved to Corfu and spent four years at the White House at the Kalami village. The staying on the island inspired the two brothers.
